Police in a New York town on Friday arrested a man suspected of attacking a stranger because he was wearing a “Trump 2024” campaign hat, according to a news release.

Caleb Williams and seven teenagers had approached a group of people waving signs outside the Neptune Beach location before they got into an argument, city police said.

“The group was only there with malicious intent to cause unrest,” Police Chief Michael Key Jr. said. from Neptune Beach. “This is not just an incident of a First Amendment protected right, but rather an incident where they were simply there to cause a disturbance.”

Rep. Laurel Lee, R-Fla., urged people in September to tone down their political rhetoric after the second assassination attempt on former President Trump.

“Clearly we have to take this seriously, take the threat seriously and tone down that rhetoric as we move forward,” she said.

President Joe Biden, in a speech to the US after the first assassination attempt, also asked Americans to “cool down” what he said had become “heated” rhetoric.

“We all now face a time of testing as the elections approach. And the higher the stakes, the more fervent the passions become,” Biden said. “This places an additional burden on all of us to ensure that no matter how strong our beliefs, we should never fall into violence.”
