Strathcona County issues fines and takes vehicles off the road for safe operation

A safety operation in Strathcona County in October saw 40 vehicles taken off the road for violating various requirements.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) inspected 66 commercial vehicles between October 8 and 10. Only 17 percent passed the inspection, the province said in a news release Monday.

“Hundreds of commercial vehicles use state roads every day, so complying with commercial vehicle requirements is critical to the safety of our roads and everyone who uses them,” said Vito DiSciglio, manager of enforcement services.

CVSA officers looked at several safety requirements, including tire inflation, secured cargo, valid driver’s license, emergency exits and proper lighting.

Drivers who fail the inspection are required to make the repairs and pay any fines. Fines can range from $324 to a seizure to see if the vehicle is safe on the road.

“We don’t do inspections just to issue fines,” DiSciglio said.

“By identifying problems before they become problems, we can prevent potential accidents and keep everyone who travels on our roads safe.”
