Illinois man arrested after allegedly punching an election judge who told him to wait in line

A Illinois The man was arrested after he claimed to have assaulted an election judge at a municipal office during early voting.

Daniel Schmidt, 24, allegedly punched an election judge in the face after being told to wait in line for his turn to vote.

Police responded to a call at the Orlando Park Township Office around 11 a.m., where they found Schmidt being held down by several people inside.

He allegedly tried to cut the voting line, prompting the election judge to ask him to return to the back of the line. When he reportedly tried to push past the judge, he was stopped again. Schmidt reportedly began cursing at the judge before punching him, knocking his glasses off his face.

Bystanders grabbed him and restrained him until police arrived. Police said Schmidt allegedly resisted arrest.

After being taken into custody, Schmidt was charged with two felony counts of aggravated battery on a victim over 60 years old, two misdemeanor counts of aggravated battery in a public place and several misdemeanors.

He was held in jail overnight and was summoned for a hearing on Monday.

At the end of last month a man came in Texas was arrested after allegedly punching a poll worker who told him he wasn’t allowed to be on the premises while wearing an article of clothing Donald Trump hat.

Texas is one of 21 states that bans any form of political attire at polling places.

The alleged attacker, Jesse Lutzenberger, 63, was arrested Oct. 24 and has been charged with a third-degree felony. He was held in jail on a $30,000 bond.
