Dartmouth College tests emergency alert system

HANOVER, NH (WCAX) – Sirens from an emergency alert system sounded Monday in Hanover, New Hampshire.

Dartmouth College conducted a test of its mass emergency notification system using sirens and outdoor public addresses.

The test is conducted each year by the Office of Emergency Management at Dartmouth.

Members of the Dartmouth community were also notified by email and text message.

City officials say the council and the city work closely together in the event of a true emergency.

“Yes, it also needs to be tested, so it’s good to know what’s going on and that it works. And then just communicating back and forth at every level to make sure we know what’s going on on campus, they know what’s going on in the city,” Hanover Fire Chief Michael Gilbert said.

The siren and voice coming from the outdoor speakers can be heard up to 10 miles from campus.

Monday’s exercise lasted only a few minutes.
