Fmr. Rehoboth city commissioner charged in investigation of campaign sign theft

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. – A former Rehoboth Beach City commissioner was arrested after police say he stole campaign signs.

According to the Rehoboth Beach Police Department, officers received a complaint last week that a candidate’s campaign signs had been removed multiple times.

Police investigated and were able to identify the suspect as 78-year-old Richard Byrne, who they said was in possession of several of the stolen signs.

Byrne was arrested and charged with two counts of theft under $1,500 and two counts of criminal mischief under $1,000. He was released on his own recognizance.

Byrne previously served as a commissioner for the city of Rehoboth Beach.
