Huntsville welcomes newest city council member

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAF) – A new era begins for the Huntsville City Council. Michelle Watkins took her oath of office after defeating a two-term incumbent for the District 1 seat on the council.

Councilwoman Watkins said she is excited to begin her term. She says she wants to work to continue growing infrastructure in North Huntsville.

Watkins previously served on the Huntsville City Schools Board for eight years. She won a runoff election, defeating former councilor Devyn Keith.

Watkins is excited to begin her first term representing people in North Huntsville.

She adds that she wants to get her hands dirty during her term to make the changes the community wants to see.

“I’m just happy that my community is going to have a representative who is on the ground, someone who is involved in the community and visible in the community,” Watkins said. “I want to see some economic development in District One and I certainly want to see the infrastructure improve.”

Watkins will attend the first city council meeting on Thursday, November 7.
