City of Nacogdoches is considering new playground equipment using bond funds

NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) – A Nacogdoches park could get new upgrades as the city’s Parks and Rec Department prepares to break ground on its first bond-funded project.

“This is the first park bond project we are starting. We thought, what better way than to start with a playground?” said Jessica Sowell, director of community services for the city of Nacogdoches.

The department plans to remove old playground equipment at Robert McCrimmon Park on Woden Road. The contract and draft design will be presented to the city council on Tuesday evening.

According to Sowell, the new playground will feature slides, swings and ropes. The color scheme is also designed to match the basketball court.

“We touch those six game elements. That way we have things that spin, that rock back and forth, that are tangible, that are musical. So we have something for everyone with this design,” she said.

The department has a budget of $240,000. The park design and installation cost $222,000. If the contract is approved and signed before November 14, Sowell says they will receive a $100,000 grant from the construction company.

“So it allowed us to use that $100,000 for swings, expanded borders and play benches,” she said.

New restrooms are also covered by the park bond project funds and are expected to be installed at a later date.

“This playground has been much loved over the years, but it is definitely time for a new one,” Sowell said.

If approved by the City Council, construction and installation is expected to take approximately six months.
