Latest US elections: Harris and Trump have secured first official election results – as election day arrives for millions of Americans | American news

It’s election day in America.

Today the country will choose between two very different visions of Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

Yesterday, Ms Harris returned to the positive message from the early days of her campaign, with a focus on turning the page on the politics of division and embracing a new generation of leadership.

Meanwhile, Trump promised “the most extraordinary economic boom the world has ever seen,” touted the severity of the tariffs he would impose on Mexico, repeated anti-immigrant rhetoric and hurled personal insults at his opponent.

A large number of voters – more than 81 million – have already cast their votes early, but millions more are on their way to the polling booths.

Security at these polling stations is on high alert, with snipers, barbed wire fences and bulletproof vests.

About 40% of election officials have reportedly experienced threats or abuse.

Meanwhile, the FBI has warned that the Russians are trying to disrupt the election and spread fear with fake news about election fraud.

The latest celebrity endorsements from the campaign also filtered through yesterday, with Mick Jagger supporting Ms Harris and Joe Rogan lending his support to Mr Trump late last night.

The polls are still neck and neck and all eyes will be on seven swing states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

But a recent poll showing Harris with a three-point lead in deep-red Iowa reminds us that surprises are always on the table.
