Ethereum Devcon attendee robbed at Knifepoint in Thailand

Rooch Network co-founder Haichao Zhu has reported that he was robbed at knifepoint by two attackers in Bangkok just days before Ethereum’s Devcon conference.

It marks the latest in a series of security incidents involving crypto conference attendees in major cities.

The incident occurred at 4:30 a.m. local time when Haichao was traveling alone after arriving from a late flight. Although no injuries were reported, the attackers stole his phone, prompting warnings to other conference participants about traveling alone during night hours in the Thai capital.

“Overall, Bangkok is still a safe and fun place, but like all other places, you have to be careful of the darkness,” Haichao noted in his public warning to fellow conference attendees.

Declutter has contacted Haichao for more information.

The heist follows a worrying pattern of similar incidents at major crypto events, most notably at the Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC) in Brussels earlier this year.

Several attendees reported violent confrontations. Kilt Protocol’s head of growth, Rishant Kumar, has been working successfully defended himself against an attacker near the conference location. Another participant reportedly walked one knee injury during a robbery.

In another serious incident at EthCC, a participant reported having a gun pointed at his head during a robbery.

The timing is particularly important as thousands of developers and industry participants prepare to gather in Bangkok Developer 7Ethereum’s premier developer conference, scheduled for November 12-15 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.

The event is expected to attract prominent figures including Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and Ethereum Foundation Executive Director Aya Miyaguchi.
