Severe weather in Chicago: Heavy rain, gusty winds expected tonight, Election Day 2024, low severe threat in the area

CHICAGO (WLS) — An AccuWeather Alert for heavy rain and gusty winds is in effect Monday evening. There is also a very low threat for severe storms.

Precipitation held off across most of the area Monday afternoon. There are still gusts of wind and mild temperatures, ABC7 Chicago meteorologist Larry Mowry said.

There is a chance of heavy rain on Monday night, with isolated thunderstorms and wind speeds of more than 70 km/h. There is a small chance of heavy storms, with wind posing the greatest threat.

The far southwestern suburbs are at a Level 1 risk for severe weather.

Heavy rain will fall after 6:00 PM, with the heaviest rain likely between 8:00 PM and 2:00 AM

One to two inches of rain could fall in part of the area. Higher totals are also possible, which could lead to flooding.

More heavy rain is possible between 2am and 8am on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, election day, occasional showers are possible, with mild temperatures.

There is a slight chance of a severe storm Tuesday, with gusty winds and a brief spin-up tornado possible east of Chicago.

Most of the rain will have cleared from the area around 7pm on Tuesday.
