Who are the Menendez brothers?

Lyle Menendez and Erik Menendez, better known as the Menendez Brothers, rose to fame in 1989 after killing their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez. Kitty was a housewife while Jose worked as a housewife entertainment managerial. They shot their parents in their Beverly Hills mansion. At the time, Lyle was 21 years old, while Erik was 18 years old.

The brothers confessed that they their parents murdered in self-defense. They explained that they feared their parents would kill them if they revealed that they had suffered years of sexual and emotional abuse at the hands of their father.

Lyle reiterated that he had confronted his father about sexually abusing Erik just days before the murders, and he responded angrily. He gave explicit evidence of the alleged assault. Their mother was devastated as a result of Jose’s many affairs.

After one series of trials and annulments, they were found guilty of first-degree murder. The judge ruled that there was insufficient evidence to justify a conclusion that Jose had sexually abused his sons. They were each sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
