Harleyville woman charged in hit-and-run crash that killed Berkeley County detention officer

A Harleyville woman was arrested in connection with a collision with collision That resulted in the death of a Berkeley County detention officer early Monday morning, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Jessica Ann Goodwin, 30, was charged with crash resulting in death, Trooper Nick Pye said.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as 26-year-old Sergeant Devon Lindsay, who was riding a motorcycle at the time of the collision. He was working at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center and was reporting on duty when he was hit, officers said.

Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell confirmed that Sgt. Lindsay was wearing a helmet.

The collision happened just before 5 a.m. on Old Gilliard Road, officials said. Goodwin and Lindsay were both heading north when Goodwin struck Lindsay’s motorcycle, Pye said.

Goodwin fled the scene after the collision but was later located.
