Keir Starmer announces Labour’s plan to tackle people smuggling

Watch again as Sir Keir Starmer announced Work‘s plan to tackle human smuggling on Monday (November 4) during the Interpol General Assembly Glasgow.

The prime minister And Minister of the Interior both spoke at the Interpol General Assembly at the start of a week-long blitz on small boat crossings that will also feature Sir Keir. Hungary for discussions about tackling human smuggling.

Speaking in Scotland, the Prime Minister pledged a further £75 million for the Border Command, doubling total funding to £150 million over the next two years.

The money will be used to finance high-tech surveillance equipment and 100 specialized investigators who will focus on criminals involved in human trafficking.

The Prime Minister said “the world needs to wake up to the seriousness” of the crossing challenge.

“I was elected to provide security for the British people. And strong boundaries are part of that. But security does not stop at our borders,” he said.

“There is nothing progressive about turning a blind eye when men, women and children die in the Channel.”

More than 5,000 people crossed the Channel in small boats in October, making it the busiest month of the year for crossings so far.

Moreover, more than 430 people arrived during the first two days of November.
