World’s First Sarco Suicide Pod User Was Reportedly Strangled; Boss remains in custody

TW: Mention of suicide.

The Sarco suicide capsule, also known as the ‘Tesla of euthanasia’, was used for the first time on September 24 by a 64-year-old American woman. The unnamed immunocompromised elderly died when they entered the 3D-printed portable capsule near the Swiss-German border in Merishausen. The American woman who suffered from osteomyelitis did not want to live for at least two years because there was no effective treatment available for the autoimmune disease. According to reports, the woman was warned before the machine administered a fatal dose of nitrogen to her. The machine beeped, “If you want to die, press the button,” and she did. Florian Willet, the co-president of Last Resort, the Swiff affiliate of Exit International (a euthanasia rights organization), was the only witness at the suicide scene. Following the incident, several people, including two lawyers and a photographer, were taken into police custody. The autopsy of the deceased’s body has revealed chilling details that are raising suspicions about the organization that assisted in the suicide. According to Swiss officials, the Sarco capsule has not been approved and, at the time of writing, all 371 active applications for the suicide capsules have been annulled.

During the autopsy of the American woman, strangulation marks were found around her neck. The inventor of the Sarco pod, Philip Nitschke, was not on site and discussed the suicide via a glitchy video call. According to reports, Willet told Phillip during the video call that the woman was still alive after the trial. This comment reportedly came after 6.5 minutes of pressing the button, while the total time of the procedure is about 10 minutes. Prosecutors are now investigating the incident as a case of “intentional murder.” Willet remains in police custody as others have already been released.
