voters who decide on ten school improvement measures

There are 10 school bond measures on voter ballots in Shasta County. Supporters of the measures are asking voters to approve funding that school supporters want to use to modernize and repair their schools’ leaking roofs and clog-prone pipes and, in one case, even build a new school.

Here are the four school bond measures to keep an eye on Tuesday night:

Measure M in the Shasta Union High School District

Shasta County’s largest school district stretches from Igo-Ono to Shingletown and has approximately 5,100 students. The district is seeking voter approval for a continuation of the school district’s current $56.6 million tax. That would be an extension of a property tax that has been in place since 2001 and would otherwise end in 2028.

The bond money would establish a culinary arts facility at Enterprise High School, but the bulk of the funding is for infrastructure repairs and upgrades to the district’s campuses. The district includes Enterprise, Foothill, Shasta and University Preparatory School high schools.

Meet J in the Gateway Unified School District

Of the 10 measures, the one proposed by the Gateway Unified School District has the highest price tag. A yes vote on Measure J would authorize $65 million in bonds, about $3.7 million annually, to Gateway for its infrastructure repairs. Supporters say the money would also help the district pay for upgrades to its career technical education classrooms and laboratories.

According to school officials, the infrastructure in need of repair includes leaking roofs, deteriorating portable classrooms, bathrooms with plumbing problems and asphalt that needs to be replaced.

The 2,300-student Gateway district includes one elementary school, two elementary schools and two middle schools, as well as the K-12 independent study program, Gateway Community Options.

Measures N and O in the Pachecho Union School District

One district says it expects voters to approve two measures to provide funding to help the district address student overcrowding by building a new school and making infrastructure improvements.

Pacheco’s Measure O also asks voters for $14.7 million in bonds, $860,000 per year, to build a new school for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Measure N would authorize $14.5 million in bonds, or about $843,000 per year, so the district can make infrastructure improvements.
