Planning to go go to the polls today to vote?

It’s best to know what you can and can’t do before you go to your local police station. And yes, now that early voting has ended, you should vote in your assigned district.

Out of 443,257 registered voters in Brevard CountyAs of Monday afternoon, 265,611 people had already voted in person or by mail. That means 177,646 Brevard residents could cast their votes today for America’s next president, along with many other races and issues.

Here are some things you need to know before you vote.

Go to the correct district

On election day, you must go to your assigned precinct.

If you don’t know where your neighborhood is, you can find it at votebrevard.gov.

The polling stations are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. As long as you are in line at 7pm, you can vote no matter how long the line is.

In general, peak voting times are from 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM, 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, and 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

You must be a registered voter to participate in the November 5 election. If you are not registered now, you must sit out this election.

Bring proper identification

Voters must bring a current and acceptable form of identification.

It must contain your photo and signature. If your registration or identity is questioned, you can request an explanation and cast a provisional vote.

If you do not bring a valid ID, you can still vote provisionally. As long as you qualify in the correct precinct and cast your vote, your provisional ballot will count, provided the signature on your provisional ballot matches the signature on your registration file.

Here is a list of acceptable forms of identification:

  • Florida driver’s license
  • Florida ID card
  • Retirement Center ID
  • Public Assistance ID
  • Neighborhood association ID
  • Permit to carry a concealed weapon or firearm
  • American passport
  • Military ID
  • Student ID
  • Debit card or credit card
  • Veterans Health ID Card
  • Government-issued employee identification card

Put down the camera while voting

No voting selfies allowed. In fact, photography is not allowed in the polling station.

Mark your ballot correctly

Use a black pen, provided to you, to completely fill in the oval next to your choice. Do not circle the oval or the candidate’s name.

Do not put your name on the ballot.

Check both sides of the ballot.

It’s okay to skip a race or question. The voting scanner counts the races in which you voted.

Once your ballot has been scanned and accepted, you will not be able to change your votes. It’s a good idea to view a sample ballot before voting. You can take a sample ballot paper with you when voting.

If you make a mistake before returning your ballot, you are entitled to up to two replacement ballots.

Can you wear clothes to support a candidate when voting?

Yes, you can wear shirts, hats and buttonswhatever you want, in support of your favorite candidate.

However, ‘active campaigning’ at polling stations is prohibited.

This means that anyone within 100 meters of a polling station cannot disperse, ask or campaign. Any attempt to do so is considered a first-degree felony.

County staff and volunteers can provide assistance to voters who have difficulty seeing or having the ballot read to them.
