'The Room Next Door' and 'Emelia Perez' Top Nominations for the European Film Awards 2024

If you’re curious about which films Oscar voters abroad tend to support, look no further than the nominees for the 37th European Film Awards. The European Film Academy this morning announced this year’s list of awards and two potential Best Picture nominees: ‘The Room Next Door’ by Pedro Almodovar“And Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez” led all films with four nominations, including Best European Film. Mohammed Rasoulof ‘The Seed of the Sacred Fig’ also earned a nomination for Best European Film, as well as Director and Screenplay.

“Perez,” a Netflix release in the U.S., also received nominations for director, screenplay and European actress Karla Sofia Gascón. As will happen many times this season, Gascón makes history as the first trans actress nominated in this category. Sony Classics is distributing “Next Door” domestically, and they also saw Almodovar gain recognition as director and screenplay, as well as a European actress nomination for Tilda Swintonher third overall. She won in 2011 for “We need to talk about Kevin.”

Magnus von Horn’s ‘The Girl with the Needle’ somehow didn’t get one of the ten European film nominations, but it did take two European actress places Trine Dyrholm And Vic Carmen Sonne as well as a European screenplay nod to von Horn and Line Langebek.

Renate Reinsve rounded out the field for European Actresses for “Armand”, which is also recognized in the European Discovery – Prix FIPRESCI category.

Coralie Fargeat critically acclaimed hit “The Substance” earned nominations for European films and European screenplays. Somehow Demi Moore got rejected in European Actress.

The field of European actors is discussed “Queer’s” Daniel Craig, “Souleymane’s Story” Abou Sangare, “Bird” Franz Rogowski, “Dying” Lars Eidinge, And “Conclave” Ralph Fiennesa notable nomination among this voting pool, considering how broad Focus Features’ release is.

Audiard, Almodovar and Rasoulof were joined in the field of European directors by Andrea Arnold And Maura Delpero for “Bird” and “Vermiglio,” respectively.

This year’s European Film Awards will be presented on December 7 in Lucerne, Switzerland. The nominees and winners are determined by the approximately 5,000 members of the European Film Academy, based in Berlin.
