Coldplay’s Chris Martin falls through a trap door on stage

It was an angry, wild wind that blew down the doors to let him in.

Or maybe it was just distraction from a record-breaking crowd that led Chris Martin to tumble through a trap door at Coldplay’s Sunday concert in Melbourne.

In images made by concertgoers and posted on social mediathe 47-year-old musician points to several fan posters and flags before backing into an open hatch. From beneath the Marvel Stadium stage, a crew member extends his arms to catch Martin’s fall.

“That’s not planned,” the “Viva la Vida” singer noted as he readjusted his microphone pack and climbed back onto the stage. “That was almost a YouTube moment.”

Apart from a case of “the jitters”, Martin assured fans he had suffered no injuries. As he peered down through the stage door, Martin thanked the crew members who came to his aid and joked, “You get a bonus, you get a bonus.”

A representative for Martin did not immediately respond to The Times’ request for comment on Tuesday.

The accident comes less than a month after the pop star Olivia Rodrigo fell through the stage during a performance in Melbourne, albeit in a different arena.

During her finals Guts tour Stop at Rod Laver Arena, Rodrigo was running across the stage, pointing to cheering fans, when she fell through a trap door. “I’m fine,” she said as she jumped back up, “where was I?”

The ‘Vampire’ singer later joked about herself and posted a dramatic edit of the tumble TikTok.

After the Guts tour ended at the end of October, Rodrigo decided recounted the incident to Jimmy Fallon in an appearance on his late-night show.

“It was really scary,” Rodrigo said, confirming she was unharmed. “I mean, the show must go on. That’s showbiz, baby.’

Meanwhile, Coldplay’s Music from the Spheres World Tour – which started in March 2022 and ends with a 10-day run at London’s Wembley Stadium in September 2025 – continues in Sydney on Wednesday.

The British band’s four-night run in Melbourne broke the Marvel Stadium record with 227,000 attendees during the shows. announced Sunday. The record was previously held by AC/DC for fourteen years, with a total of 181,495 concertgoers across three shows in 2010, according to Billboard.
