VARANASI: A man in Varanasi’s Bhadaini area allegedly shot dead his wife, two sons and a daughter while on parole late on Monday. Later, he was found dead in an under-construction building in Sadarpur village of Rohania on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident took place at the family’s residence in Bhadaini area on Monday evening when Rajendra Gupta, 50, allegedly attacked his wife Neetu Gupta (45), their sons Navnendra (25) and Subendra (15) and daughter Gaurangi (16). had murdered their sleep. , said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Kashi Zone) Gaurav Banswal.
Investigate whether it was murder or suicide
During the initial investigation, it came to light that Rajendra Gupta had also murdered his father, brother, sister-in-law and a security guard since 1997, and that he had a bitter relationship with his wife.
After taking stock of the site at Bhadaini under Bhelupur police station, DCP Banswal said all aspects, including family and property disputes, are being taken into account in the police investigation into the murders. It is also being investigated whether Gupta committed suicide after killing his family or was killed by someone else, the DCP said.
Police collected Gupta’s criminal history with details of when and how he got out of jail. In addition, it is also checked whether he had licensed weapons, the DCP said.
Gupta owned a building with over 50 rooms in the Bhadaini area. He lived with his family in the same building, while more than twenty tenants also lived in different rooms of the building.
Gupta also owned more buildings and had a huge income not only from his tenants but also from the liquor trade in his country. His elder son Navnendra worked at a multinational in Bengaluru, while Gupta’s other children studied in a government school.
Navnendra came home on Diwali holiday and was supposed to return to Bengaluru after the Chhath festival. He had purchased agricultural land in Sadarpur and a building was also constructed there. According to police, none of the tenants heard the sound of shooting.
The incident came to light on Tuesday morning when no one opened the doors of the part of the building where the Gupta family lived. The maid opened the door and saw the family lying in a pool of blood, while Gupta himself was missing.
Commissioner of Police Mohit Agrawal, District Magistrate S. Rajalingam and many other senior officials also reached the venue.
Later, Gupta’s body was found in Sadarpur village with a gunshot wound on his neck.
Police said they are trying to determine the motive behind the killings and a detailed investigation is underway.
