‘Disgruntled ex-employee’ shoots two people dead, Chicago police say

Two men at Chicago’s Navy Pier were killed by what officials call a “disgruntled former employee.”

On Tuesday, November 5, Chicago Police Department officers responded to a call of “shots fired, multiple persons possibly shot.” The incident happened around 1:18 p.m. on the north side of Navy Pier, near an administration office in a loading dock, Patrol Chief Jon Hein said one afternoon. press conference.

According to Hein, the “disgruntled former employee,” who had been fired on October 14, entered the loading dock and fired “several shots,” striking two people. They were later taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where they died from their injuries.

Although the identities of the victims have not yet been released, WBBM TV reports that the two are men, aged 47 and 51.

Leena Porter, who was visiting the tourist attraction when the incident occurred, told the news station that she saw a heavy police presence afterwards.

“The police were everywhere. They just came through and started telling people to get out of the way. They were moving people, no cars were coming through. They were blocking it off,” she said.

‘It’s insane. I just hope they get who they want,” Porter continued.

While Hein noted that the investigation is still “very early” and that detectives are still processing the scene, he said police have a person of interest for whom they are “actively looking” and called the shooting an “isolated incident’.

“The pier is safe now. The pier is safe. We wouldn’t open if we didn’t believe and know it was safe,” he said.

Navy Pier Chief Operating Officer Brian Murphy echoed similar sentiments, saying the “isolated incident” occurred in a “private office in the loading deck area,” a “non-public area” at Navy Pier.

“We immediately implemented our security protocols and locked down Navy Pier,” Murphy said, noting that officials confirmed through security cameras that the former employee had left the area.

“At no time did we feel that any member of the public was in danger. This was more of a targeted issue that occurred today at Navy Pier,” he said. The lockdown has now been lifted.
