US election results so far show Kamala Harris’ path to the White House narrowing

Millions of Americans and people around the world are holding their breath as they await the outcome of the US presidential election.

The outcome of Tuesday’s election battle between Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former President Donald Trump will certainly resonate around the world.

Pre-election polls could barely separate the pair, while the bookmakers may have been aware of his shock White House victory in 2016, gave Trump a narrow lead.

Because voting takes place in four different time zones, the first polling stations closed at 12:00 GMT on Wednesday morning and the last polls closed early on Wednesday at 6:00 GMT.

The winning candidate must achieve a majority in the Electoral College.

The numbers in the Electoral College for each state are divided depending on the number of people they send to Congress.

That means each state gets two senators, and a number for the House of Representatives tied to their population.

That means California, the most populous state, gets 54 votes in the Electoral College and the least populous (like Alaska and Wyoming) gets three.

There are 538 total electors, and the magic number needed to secure the White House is 270.

US elections in the past we have seen the winner emerge early Wednesday morning.

However, the 2020 election only saw Joe Biden confirmed as Trump’s winner four days after Election Day.

Here are the results of the 2024 US elections so far (according to AP’s reported results and calls):
