Five dead after small plane crashes into vehicle after takeoff in suburban Phoenix

MESA, Ariz. – A small plane crashed into a vehicle after taking off from an airport in suburban Phoenix on Tuesday, killing five people, police said.

The plane crashed while taking off from Falcon Field Airport in Mesa, police there said in a statement. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the Honda HA-420 light business aircraft struck the vehicle outside the airport grounds at 4:40 p.m.

Television news video showed what appeared to be a large fire on a road near the airport.

According to police, five people died at the scene. Authorities said there were five people aboard the plane but did not indicate whether all died or whether anyone in the vehicle may have been among the victims.

The FAA, National Transportation Safety Board and Mesa authorities will investigate. No further information was released.
