Two drivers seriously injured in truck-semi crash on Highway 1 in Manitoba

The drivers of a truck and a semi-trailer truck are in hospital with serious injuries after a crash in the rural community of Cartier on Wednesday morning, RCMP say.

The truck driver lost control due to icy conditions on a bridge around 7:15 a.m. Wednesday, crossed the median and struck a tractor-trailer truck on Highway 1, police said in an email.

The truck was traveling west on the highway and struck the eastbound semi in the RM of Cartier, about 15 kilometers west of Winnipeg.

The semi went off the road and landed partially in the water in the south ditch, RCMP said.

The eastbound lanes of Highway 1 at the bridge over the Assiniboine River near St. François Xavier remain closed.

The police continue to investigate.
