Starmer offers Trump ‘warmest congratulations’ in his first call since his election victory

Sir Keir Starmer has spoken to Donald Trump and offered “congratulations” in their first conversation since the newly elected president’s election victory.

The prime minister is trying to build bridges with Trump after the Republican campaign filed a legal complaint about Labor activists supporting rival Kamala Harris.

Sir Keir congratulated Trump on his “historic victory” after American voters returned him to the White House, Downing Street said.

“The Prime Minister offered his warmest congratulations and said he looks forward to working closely with President-elect Trump in all areas of the special relationship.”

The leaders agreed that the US-Britain relationship, from defense and security to growth and prosperity, was “incredibly strong” and would “continue to thrive for many years to come,” No. 10 said.

“The leaders fondly remembered their meeting in September and President-elect Trump’s close ties and affinity with Britain, and looked forward to working together.”

Sir Keir also reflected on the situation in the Middle East and underlined the importance of regional stability.
