Jason Kelce Talks About Destroying Heckler’s Phone After Travis-Taylor Taunt

Jason Kelce is speaking out after a video of him throwing a college football fan’s phone as the fan taunted his brother Travis Kelce with a homophobic slur went viral online.

At the top of ESPN’s Countdown on Monday evening broadcast, the retired Philadelphia Eagles center spoke about the incident during which he was also heard calling the fan a “son of a bitch.”

“Everyone saw what happened,” Kelce said. “I’m not happy with what happened. I’m not proud of it. In a heated moment, I chose to greet hate with hate, and I don’t think that’s a productive thing, really. I don’t think this will lead to discussion and that it is the right way to go about things.”

“At that point I dropped to a level I shouldn’t have. The bottom line is that I try to live my life by the golden rule. It is what I have always been taught to treat people with common decency and I am going to try to continue to do that in the future. Even though I fell short this week.”

Saturday after appearing on ESPN’s College GameDay for the game between Ohio State and Penn State, a fan was filmed Kelce approached and said, “Hey, Kelce. How does it feel that your brother is dating Taylor Swift?’ referring to Kelce’s brother and Kansas City Chiefs tight end, who has been dating Swift since last year.

You can then see Jason grab the man’s phone and throw it on the ground. In other footage shared online, the fan is seen looking for his phone and seemingly told Jason, “Gimme my phone, bro” and shoved him before Kelce told him, “Who the fuck is up now?”

Penn State University police are reportedly investigating the incident involving Kelce and the unidentified college football fan at the school.

Up New heights podcast which Kelce co-hosts with Travis, he further discussed the incident. “I’m not happy with the situation, my reaction gave him the time of day and it also gave publicity to the situation. That’s what I regret. It didn’t deserve any attention, it’s really stupid,” he said. Jason further commented that if he had just kept walking, no one would have seen it and nothing would have happened. “Now it’s out there and it’s just perpetuating more hatred.”

He also said his biggest regret was using the same homophobic slur in response, which he called “crossing the line.”

“It’s inhumane and it got under my skin, it provoked a reaction. In the heat of the moment I thought, ‘Hey, what can I say to him? I’m going to throw this shit back in his face. Fuck him,” Kelce said.

“What I do regret is that there is now a video that is very hateful, that is now online and has been seen by millions of people, and I am jointly responsible for perpetuating this video and putting it on the market brought,” said Jason.

Travis praised his brother for admitting his mistake and defended him for being “sincere” and someone who doesn’t “choose hate.”

“The real situation is that a damn clown came up to you and talked about your family and you responded in a way that defended your family, and maybe you used a few words that you regret. That’s a situation you just have to learn from and own. I think you own it and you speaking out about it shows how genuine you are to a lot of people in this world,” Travis told Jason.

“You don’t choose hate, that’s just not who you are,” he added. “I love you brother, I think you said that perfectly.
