The crowd quickly leaves the grounds of Howard University after Kamala Harris’ concession speech.

Some hug, cry or hold hands.

For Andrea Martine and her husband Christian it is an emotional affair.

She wipes tears from her eyes as she tells me she is proud of the vice president’s campaign and disappointed that she lost.

“I was shocked,” says the 31-year-old expectant mother.

“I feel like there’s going to be a lot of fear for people.”

The couple praised Harris’ speech and said they are “grateful” to hear that power will be transferred peacefully to Donald Trump.

But Martine, 32, added: “It will be interesting to see how divisive Trump continues to be in his second term.

“It was terrible in 2016 when the results came in, it was shocking and surprising,” Mr Martine said.

“I think last night was different. It was deeply saddening, but it felt more like confirmation from Americans that this was the type of president they wanted.

“That is the most disturbing side of the election.”
