Jets GM Joe Douglas on his future: “Whatever happens, happens”

Jets owner Woody Johnson has already fired coach Robert Saleh. General Manager Joe Douglas isn’t worried about the possibility he’ll be next.

“I come here every day and just want to do what I can to help this team achieve its goals and reach its destination,” Douglas told reporters Wednesday, via the Associated Press. “And whatever happens, happens.”

It sounds like Douglas won’t be surprised if what happened to Saleh happens to him.

“Obviously it starts with me,” Douglas said. “I can look back and there are quite a few things I could have done better. When a situation arises like four weeks ago (with Saleh’s dismissal), you obviously have many moments of self-reflection about the things you could have done better to prevent that.”

Douglas did not fire Saleh; Johnson did it. And Douglas would not comment on the decision Johnson made, or Douglas’ role in it.

“I’m not going to go into the details or the conversations that happened before or after,” Douglas said. “Woody and I talk every day, but at the end of the day – and I think Colin Powell said it in a different arena – but I serve for the pleasure of the owner.”

Given the possibility of the owner returning to Britain as ambassador to the United States, the man who hired Douglas – Christopher Johnson – could be the one to decide his future.

Regardless of who decides the GM’s future, the Jets still have eight games left to play. At 3-6, they can still salvage the season and qualify for the play-offs. That would certainly give Douglas another year.
