DJ Moore makes it pretty clear that Matt Eberflus has lost the Bears’ locker room

There was talk in the 2024 offseason that the Chicago Bears could potentially do a hard reset on their coaching staff and let head coach Matt Eberflus go. Instead, when Caleb Williams entered the fray via the NFL Draft, they kept Eberflus. And while the Bears are off to a 4-4 start, that decision is starting to look more questionable.

Even with a much more adequate roster and a strengthened quarterback room, the Bears’ shortcomings still persist. Eberflus’ questionable decision-making has come under fire and an egg laid in Week 9 against a beatable Arizona Cardinals team didn’t help assuage concerns about the head coach. His job security is very much in question, but if the players are still bought in, it might still be worth it.

Well, he might not have that in his back pocket anymore either, at least that seems to be what wide receiver DJ Moore’s comments reflect.

During a telephone interview with Bernstein and Holmes on 670 The Score, Moore was asked directly, “Did Matt Eberflus lose this football team?” And while Moore didn’t outright say this was the case, his response of “I want to say no” is far from a resounding statement of support.

There’s a big difference between “No, he hasn’t lost the locker room” and “I want to say no.” Maybe that says way too much about how Moore answered the question, but as the sharks start circling Eberflus and the criticism continues to fly, it’s not a full-throated and confident answer that the head coach has the support of his players. let alone a team captain in Moore’s case.

But what reason does this dressing room actually have to buy Eberflus? The Bears are at .500 this season, but that felt like possibly the worst record they could get through the first half of the season. Whether you’re talking about the Hail Mary loss to Washington, the lifeless offensive efforts against the Texans, Colts and Cardinals, or just the general lack of enthusiasm on the sidelines, the atmosphere isn’t great for a team still struggling sit. play-off mix.

While I’m not currently in Halas Hall listening to front office conversations, it seems like Eberflus’ days are numbered and this just seems like more fodder for that conversation. And when someone like Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is already interested in replacing himI’d be hard-pressed if I were Ryan Poles to see that and think it wouldn’t be a substantial upgrade.
