Toll Road Scams and How to Avoid Them

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – A scam is underway with people claiming to be at the Indiana Toll Road and asking for money.

Someone contacted 21Alive and said they had received several text messages saying they owed money on tolls, but they haven’t driven through the tolls in years.

Leaders with The Better Business Bureau serving Northern Indiana say it’s a common scams across the country.

BBB Vice President and COO Jan Diaz says these scams happen a lot around the holidays because scammers know a lot of people will be traveling.

She says you usually get a text message telling you you owe money and that text message contains a link you shouldn’t click.

“Clicking on the link will take you to a website and it will look like an official toll services page. You may be asked for your social security number, date of birth, and personal identification information that these scammers are after. says Diaz.

One way to prevent this is to not respond to the text message. If you reply “STOP” or “NO,” scammers can determine that your number is active and make you a target for future attacks.

Because these are so common, one of the first automated messages when you call the Indiana Toll Road number says, “The Indiana Toll Road will not send text messages or call customers requesting unpaid tolls.”

Indiana Toll Road leaders say if you receive one of those messages, come by indianatolroad.org to report the fraudulent text message or call.
