The Laredo City Council District 4 race heads to the runoff

LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – The race for the Laredo City Council’s fourth seat is heading to a runoff election. Current Rep. Alberto Torres has reached his term limit, making this a race for a new face.

Unofficial results show Rick Garza in the lead with 33% of the vote, followed by Tannya Benavides with 29%. Because neither candidate received enough votes to win outright, the race will continue with a runoff on December 14.

Both candidates shared their thoughts on the close results.

Benavides expressed his confidence and said: “I feel very good about it. We were very close to being the biggest vote getter, and even with the turnout on Election Day we were only 50 votes behind.”

For his part, Garza shared his excitement for the next phase of the race. “I have an action plan for all these people. I can’t wait to get in there and show off what I’ve done at LISD and show off all the hard work we’ve done there. It takes a lot of planning and a bit of innovative thinking, but it’s a great process when you bring everyone together and we’re all working towards a common goal.”

The second election will take place on December 14.
