The City of Harrionburg will announce the leaf collection schedule

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – Harrisonburg Public Works has announced the schedule for its 2024 annual leaf collection service, which begins Nov. 12 and runs through mid-December, weather permitting.

Residents must place their leaves at the curb no later than Monday of the scheduled collection week to ensure collection. Leaves should be raked up to the curb, but do not extend more than 10 feet into the garden and must be kept off the streets. Streets are maintained only once per scheduled week.

West side of Main Street and Forest Hills:

• November 12 to November 15

• November 25 to November 27 (excluding public holidays)

• December 2 to December 6

East side of Main Street and Fairway Drive:

• November 18 to November 22

• November 25 to November 27 (excluding public holidays)

• December 9 to December 13

Residents who need to dispose of leaves outside of scheduled times can use biodegradable bags for collection during Wednesday Bulk Trash Day or drop off leaves at the Recycling Convenience Center. Public Works is encouraging residents to consider mulching leaves in their lawns as an alternative, which benefits the soil and reduces waste.

“Leaves can be mulched and left on the lawn to retain moisture in the soil,” says Outreach Specialist for Harrisonburg Public Works, Brittany Clem-Hott, “You can also take some of your large leaves, and you can use them as mulch under your trees”

Clem-Hott said the eco-friendly alternatives also help protect plants during the winter months. For more information, residents can contact Public Works directly or visit their official website.
