A family spokesperson said the woman had no memory of the incident. Two motorists found her and called emergency services about 5:20 p.m. They also used her phone to contact her husband, who arrived on the scene shortly afterwards.

She was taken to Palmerston North Hospital by Hato Hone St John in a serious condition and underwent a six-hour operation for a broken femur.

She is awaiting transfer to Auckland or Wellington for further operations.

The family spokesman said the woman had been through a “quite an ordeal” and would have a long road to recovery.

They hoped that witnesses would come forward, or someone with camera images of cars that were in the area at the time.

“Hopefully someone knows something.”

A motorist who arrived on the scene shortly after emergency services said there were clear tire tracks leading to where the woman was being treated.

He understood that she had walked to the car on the other side of the road, indicating that the vehicle had crossed the center line.
