Ruckus in J&K meeting after engineer Rashid’s brother shows banner on Article 370, session briefly adjourned

Opposition leaders protested aggressively in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Thursday, prompting the speaker to briefly suspend the proceedings as the BJP members started shouting slogans against the resolution calling for creation of special status for erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir. recently passed.

Members of the BJP created an uproar in the audience over the acceptance of the demand in the resolution for the Center to formulate a constitutional framework to restore the special status of the erstwhile state, which was passed by the House of Representatives yesterday.

While BJP MLA, who is also the Leader of Opposition, Sunil Sharma clarified the resolution this time, an AIP leader and MLA from Langate Sheikh Khursheed jumped into the House with a placard that read: restore Articles 370 and 35A.

The reaction of the BJP members was one of anger. They also jumped into the well, took the sign away and tore it into pieces.

Speaker Abdul Rahim Instead, after getting over the shouting, he suspended the proceedings for 15 minutes. However, that did not happen and the BJP members roamed even when the House was adjourned.

The House was quiet, just as it was calm after the resolution was passed on Wednesday, but pandemonium broke out again as the BJP members raised the decibel levels, following which the proceedings were once again disrupted and the Speaker had to send the House home for the day.

J&K Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary had moved a resolution stating: “That this Legislative Assembly reaffirms the importance of the special status and constitutional guarantees, which protected the identity, culture and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, and expresses its concern about their unilateral removal.”

To restore special status and constitutional guarantees, the JK Assembly called on the Indian government to engage in dialogue with elected JK representatives and work out constitutional procedures for the same.
