The Gautier City Council approves the citywide leisure and recreation district

GAUTIER, Miss. (WLOX) – Soon, Gautier businesses will allow customers to leave with alcoholic beverages thanks to the creation of a citywide leisure and recreation district.

The ordinance approved by the City Council on Tuesday requires alcoholic beverages to be limited to one person, less than one gallon, and in a paper or plastic container.

Gautier is the latest city in Jackson County to adopt a leisure and recreation district. However, it is the only citywide ordinance in the county.

Mayor Casey Vaughan explains this is an economic development incentive.

“I felt – as the mayor of Gautier and where we are and how the city is laid out – that it’s best that we take this on for the entire city so that we don’t turn anyone away,” said Mayor Vaughan. No one is influenced by one company over another. They all have the same ability to offer this to the residents of Gautier and the guests visiting Gautier.”

The leisure and recreation district will go into effect 30 days after enactment.

Mayor Vaughan adds that this is something the city had to check off its list as the city continues to grow.
