Aston Villa news: Tyrone Mings handball stuns Chris Sutton

BBC Radio 5 Live’s Alistair Bruce-Ball and former Premier League striker Chris Sutton were left confused and bewildered by Tyrone Mings against Club Brugge on Wednesday, after the defender was penalized for collecting Emiliano Martinez’s goal-kick in the penalty area and making a had been awarded a penalty.

“I really don’t know what Mings was thinking,” Bruce-Ball said on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast. “It was a completely bizarre thing to do and they ended up losing a game.”

“I don’t know what he was thinking either!” Sutton added. “The referee has no choice in that situation because he scooped the ball with his hand.

“Villa got what they deserved because the level of performance wasn’t there. They looked a tired and jaded team who failed to click in the final third.

“If Martinez hadn’t been there, the score could have been bigger.

“There is work to be done because although they have had a good start to the season, the performances against Crystal Palace, Tottenham and now Club Brugge have not been at the same level. That is the concern for Unai Emery and Aston Villa.”
