CHINA GROVE – The driver killed Tuesday evening in a single-car crash on Ebenezer Road along the stretch of street that enters China Grove has been identified by NC State Highway Patrol.

Police say Jose Miguel Rosales Hernandez, 39, of Kannapolis died after the 2024 silver pickup he was driving went off the road just past East 22nd Street, where Ebenezer crosses a creek. According to accident reports, at about 5:41 p.m., Hernandez crossed the center line and ran off the left side of the road, hitting a traffic sign and a bridge guardrail. The truck then jumped the creek, hit an embankment and overturned.

Hernandez was not wearing a seat belt, officials said, and speed was a factor in the crash.

One passenger was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Cabarrus with non-life-threatening injuries. The Mount Mitchell and Kannapolis fire departments, along with Rowan Rescue, responded to the crash, which was investigated by the highway patrol. Hernandez’s family was notified of his death.
