Geneva Democrats are celebrating local turnout and looking ahead to the municipal elections

The Democratic Committee of the City of Geneva is celebrating strong Democratic voter turnout in Geneva and seeing high levels of resident engagement, despite mixed results in national races. The committee thanked voters for their large turnout and stressed that the energy on display at their election headquarters in Castle Street provides a promising basis for next year’s local elections.

“We were encouraged by the constant flow of people stopping by to share their concerns and hopes,” the committee said, expressing optimism that voters will remain involved in electing new city councilors and opposing the policies of the new national administration .

The committee highlighted a number of notable achievements, including the statewide passage of Proposition 1, which amends the New York State Constitution to include equal rights and protect reproductive rights. The commission called this a crucial victory, especially in light of what they described as “new threats” to these rights at the national level. They also congratulated U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand on her re-election, a victory they see as reassuring for New Yorkers.

Geneva Democrats were proud of the local voter turnout for Democratic candidates during the vote. They are awaiting the final certified results from the Electoral Council, which will provide a fuller picture of Geneva’s participation. Early indications from in-person results on Election Day point to what the committee described as a “strong outpouring of support for Democratic candidates.”

The committee expressed disappointment that candidates Dave Wagenhauser and Scott Comegys, who ran for local seats, failed to unseat their incumbents. Both ran “fantastic campaigns,” the committee said, adding that they remain proud of both candidates’ efforts. The committee remains hopeful in a closely contested Supreme Court race in which Democratic candidate Erin Skinner has a potential path to victory.

The national results prompted an impassioned response from the committee, which thanked Vice President Kamala Harris for inspiring local supporters while lamenting the re-election of a president they consider “unfit” and a “threat to progress.” The committee pledged to keep organizing efforts strong in Geneva and stated that they are committed to “moving Geneva and New York forward.”

As they look to the future, the Democratic Committee of the City of Geneva is calling on local residents to stay involved in their efforts, and encourages supporters to connect with them on social media and join their work to to support democratic values and candidates.
