Maui woman dies from injuries days after crash in Haiku

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A 44-year-old woman who was seriously injured in a crash in Haiku on Halloween morning has died, Maui police said Wednesday.

She has been identified as Shelly Kan-Hai, of Kahului.

The accident happened just before 6 a.m. on Oct. 31 on West Kuiaha Road.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a Kia Sorento was traveling southbound when it left the roadway, struck a fence and overturned.

Police said Good Samaritans freed two people — Kan-Hai and a 2-year-old girl — from the vehicle.

Kan-Hai was unresponsive and transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition. She died on Tuesday from her injuries.

The toddler was not injured, police said.

MPD is still investigating whether speed, alcohol and drugs played a role.
