FAI Cup final: Drogheda v Derry City – everything you need to know

Derry City manager Ruaidhri Higgins speaks to BBC Sport NI: “We haven’t shown enough consistency all season, but we now have the opportunity to end the season on a very high note and give this city something to cheer about and make a lot of people happy.

“That’s what we’re there for in football, to have special days like this. Cup finals are all about winning, so whatever we need to win, we have to do.

“If we can even come close to the performance level of a few years ago (the win over Shels), then we give ourselves a very good chance.

“I can’t remember a route to the final like this. Every time a draw is made you wince, such difficult ties, but the players deserve so much credit, because they show real strength of character in difficult venues and at home. I hope that we can go one step further, it would mean so much to everyone associated with the club.

“We know we are slight favorites in some people’s eyes. We have to embrace everything and enjoy it. We have a chance to win two in three years and that is the motivation.”

Derry have the chance to qualify for European competition with a win in the cup final.

“We are a club that expects to play in European competition. There is no doubt about that.

“It’s been a strange few weeks, we had a chance to win the league and now we have to win the cup to qualify for Europe. It’s been a rollercoaster year, some good performances, some not so good, but we know that we are capable of playing well and performing well on these types of occasions.”
