Schools delayed, roads closed due to flooding in Aiken, Bamberg and Orangeburg

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) – Schools have been delayed and several roads are closed in Aiken, Bamberg and Orangeburg counties due to heavy flooding, officials said.

Aiken County

Aiken County Public School District officials announced that due to heavy rains that have flooded, washed out and led to road closures across the county, schools and offices will operate on a two-hour delay on Thursday, November 7.

Due to the delayed start, only lunch will be served in our cafeterias tomorrow. Students on half-day schedules, including early learning special education students and others, will not come to school Thursday because buses cannot make afternoon routes, officials say.

The Aiken County Career Center does not have morning classes. Students report to their secondary school with a two-hour delay. Rain is expected throughout the day, according to the district.

Exercise extreme caution when traveling to school and work. If you encounter flooded roads, turn around, officials advise.

The Aiken Department of Public Safety has closed the following roads:

  • Whiskey Road from Knox Avenue to Grace Avenue
  • Intersection of University Parkway and Vaucluse Road
  • Price Avenue between Whiskey Road and Two Notch

Officials are urging motorists to seek alternate routes and avoid these areas until further notice.

The Best Friend Express public transport buses will also be delayed by two hours on November 7 due to the flooding.

Province of Bamberg

Due to deteriorating road conditions, all Bamberg County schools will switch to an eLearning day on Thursday, officials say.

Students should follow their remote learning plans and log in as directed by their teachers. Additionally, all after-school programs and activities have been canceled for the day.

Province of Oranjeburg

Officials with the Orangeburg County Emergency Operations Center said the county is experiencing flash flooding in parts of central and western Orangeburg County, with multiple roads closed.

Flash floods occur in many areas. Limit travel and exercise extreme caution, officials urge.

Orangeburg County School District officials have announced that due to heavy rain and challenging road conditions in our area, all schools in the Orangeburg County School District will have a three-hour delay.

Officials say students should arrive three hours later than their usual start time. For example, students who usually report at 8 a.m. must now arrive at 11 a.m. Teachers and staff also have a three-hour delay and must report three hours after their normal start time.
