Social media ban: Australia plans to ban social media for children under 16

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said the plans are aimed at reducing the “harm” social media can cause to children.

He explained: “These tech companies are incredibly powerful. These apps have algorithms that drive people to certain behaviors.”

Albanese said his government has spoken to parents, social media platforms and experts about the age limit.

While many details remain to be debated, the government said the ban would not apply to young people already on social media.

There would also be no exceptions to the age limit for children who have parental consent.

The government added that social media platforms must also demonstrate that they are taking reasonable steps to prevent access.
