Bystanders help apprehend suspect after officer-involved motorcycle crash in Holmesburg

Philadelphia police are investigating a crash involving an officer on a motorcycle in Holmesburg on Wednesday evening.

SKYFOX was live in the area of Stanwood and Leon streets, where there was a heavy police presence.

Police sources told FOX 29’s Steve Keeley that a suspect on a dirt bike struck a police motorcycle.

Sources say the sergeant driving his Harley-Davidson highway motorcycle westbound on Stanwood Street was struck by this dirt bike traveling northbound on Leon Street.

All witnesses say the dirt bike was traveling at a high rate of speed.

They say the dirt bike ran the stop sign and hit the left side of his motorcycle.

The dirt bike at the scene was not street legal because it was missing a license plate, front lights, tail lights and turn signals. It seemed to be made for a dirt road.

As the suspect tried to escape, the injured officer yelled at a nearby homeowner, Tony Wade, to help keep the suspect at the scene.

Keeley was on scene and spoke with Wade, who said a shoving match ensued between him and the 22-year-old suspect during Wade’s heroic efforts to prevent the suspect from fleeing.

The injured officer was then able to regain his position, enough to properly arrest the suspect.

The officer was taken to Nazareth hospital by the police.

This is an ongoing investigation.
