Process to cancel 200 driving licenses: Pune RTO

Pune: The RTO has initiated the process to cancel driving licenses of 200 motorists after Pune police recommended cancellation of their licenses for driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol.
Pune RTO Archana Gaikwad told TOI on Thursday, “We have started the process of canceling the driving licenses of 200 vehicle users, whose names were recommended in the first proposal sent to us by the police.”
She said: “We have the power to revoke driving licenses even though the police have requested the driving licenses be revoked. Although the process of revoking driver’s licenses has begun, the actual suspension will take some time as a majority of our staffers have been involved in state meetings. election duty.”
Gaikwad said, “Only the court can revoke a driving license in case of a drunk driving conviction. We may revoke a person’s driver’s license in the event of his/her second conviction by a court for a similar offense. As such, we are now suspending driver’s licenses for a period determined by law (90 days or 120 days). If there is a repeat offender, we can revoke his/her driver’s license.”
Pune police have taken action against 2,556 people driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol in the last ten days. The police have sent proposals to the Pune Regional Transport Officer (RTO) to cancel the driving licenses of 485 of these offenders.
Following the October 11 accident in Mundhwa in which a food delivery boy was killed after an Audi car driven by a drunken businessman hit his scooter, police launched a special drive against drunk drivers. A total of 2,556 vehicle users were fined for driving under the influence until October 31.
Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil told TOI, “Out of 2,556 drink-driving offenders, we have sent reports to the RTO for cancellation of driving licenses of 485 offenders.”
Asked why the police did not approach the court seeking cancellation of driving licenses when the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act were clear on this point, the Additional Commissioner said, “We know that the RTO has the power to cancel driving licenses, but we have written to them to revoke the licenses. Our job is to inform the RTO about the violation as they are the licensing authority. If the list includes second-time offenders, it may revoke their licenses.
Patil said, “We will also approach the court after registering FIRs against the drunk drivers seeking cancellation of their driving license. We are following up on the matter with various courts in the city.”
