Peter Gurley was identified Tuesday as the man killed in a house fire in Nantucket

Officials identified a man who was killed a house fire that broke out on Nantucket Tuesday evening as a 62 year old man.

Firefighters arrived at 6 Green Meadows Road on Tuesday around 7:30 p.m. Inside, they found Peter Gurley, who was rushed to Nantucket Cottage Hospital, where he died from his injuries, according to the state fire marshal’s office.

A dog was also recovered from the burning house and taken to the Offshore Animal Hospital.

Researchers found no working smoke detectors inside the single-family home, State Fire Marshal Jon Davine’s office said in a statement.

The fire started in the living room, where smoking materials and a power strip charging various electronic devices were found, according to the statement. Six smoke detectors were found disabled, removed from their bases, with dead batteries or no batteries at all.

“Smoke detectors are fundamental life safety tools and I urge all of our residents to be sure they are on every floor of your home,” said Nantucket Fire Chief Michael Cranson.
