Personal statement

The Undergraduate Admission Committee will use your written essay to learn more about you and assess your writing skills. It is very important that you write these essays yourself so that we can make our admission decision based on your English language skills. We do not intend for the writing sample to be a formal piece, but rather a response to one of our questions. Try to be specific when describing interests, beliefs, or experiences.

Activities/Interests

At many high schools in the United States, students participate in clubs, sports, and community service. The Undergraduate Admission Committee understands that extracurricular activities will vary depending on one’s culture and educational system. On this page, mention interests, activities or work experiences that give the committee insight into your life and the way you have chosen to spend your free time.

Name

Your name must always be written in the same order on all correspondence. Be consistent. Students must enter their last name or surname as their “surname” on the application and all supporting documents. Non-US citizens must ensure that they write their name exactly as it appears on their passport. Applying under one name and sending documents and credentials under another name will delay the process.

Citizen service number

If you are not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you may not have a Social Security number. Please leave this section blank. The Office of Undergraduate Admission will assign you a student identification number.

Date of birth

Enter the month first, followed by the day and then the year.

First-year student or transfer student

Unless you have already completed studies at a university, mark as a first-year student. You are still eligible for transfer credit and may later be classified as a second-year student.

CEEB number

This number is given to many international schools by the College Board to help track applicants; leave this blank if your school does not have such a number.

Main area of study

Unlike many other foreign universities, William & Mary students do not choose a major area of study until the end of their sophomore year. Please highlight your area of interest, but understand that your selection is not a factor in the admission decision.
