Former 111th Candidate Mastroianni Charged In Mail Incident | News

Mastroianni, who lost his parliamentary election in Tuesday’s election, was charged Thursday with one count of petit larceny, a misdemeanor, police said in a news release.

The images of Mastroianni allegedly receiving the mailer were sent by the Schenectady County Democratic Committee last month, with a complaint attached that was sent from the party to law enforcement agencies, state election officials and the US Postal Service.

Village police have acknowledged an investigation into the incident.

On Thursday, Acting Police Chief Adam Halbfinger indicated the investigation had been completed.

The investigation revealed no other victims and the incident appeared to be isolated, police wrote.

However, Mastroianni was charged with one count of petit larceny. He turned himself in on Thursday, police wrote.

The video allegedly showed the Republican Party-backed Conservative and an unknown person walking to a suburban household. Saying “bad, bad, bad,” Mastroianni grabbed what appeared to be a mailer from rival Democratic incumbent Angelo Santabarbara, folded it and stuffed it in his jacket before placing another mailer in the home.

A time stamp on the video shows the scene was captured on October 17 at 5:55 p.m

Mail theft is a federal crime. Convictions for such a crime can result in up to five years in prison.

The petit larceny charge is a state charge and a misdemeanor.

While a candidate, Mastroianni told reporters that the known use of law enforcement resources in the case is “very” troubling. “But given the Democratic machine’s brutal prosecutions of President Donald Trump, that would hardly be a surprise.”

Mastroianni, a Republican Party-backed conservative, faced incumbent 111th Assembly Democrat Angelo Santabarbara for the seat on Tuesday. Sandabarbara won with 59.23 percent of the votes, according to unofficial figures. Mastroianni took 36.14 percent.

It was Mastroianni’s second run for Assembly against Santabarbara since 2022. Mastroianni, a family businessman who was first elected to the Rotterdam municipal council in 2021, expressed his intention to run for office shortly after the 2023 election cycle the seat of state.
