Golden police officer struck and killed on icy highway identified

GOLDEN, Colo. (KKTV) – The city of Golden has identified the officer who died in a crash while working on an icy road Wednesday evening.

According to Colorado State Patrol, three Golden officers were working a crash scene on Highway 58 just before 5 p.m. The location was just east of Washington Avenue, on a curved overpass. As two of the three officers stood outside along the road managing the property, state police said a car sped through the scene, striking both officers and forcing them under the original crashed vehicle. One of the officers was killed, while the other was seriously injured.

On Thursday, the officer killed in the crash was identified as 33-year-old Officer Evan Dunn. The city said he is survived by his wife Annalize and dog Remy, as well as his parents and two siblings.

CBS Denver says he was called to serve both country and community, having served in the military before becoming a police officer.

“He was a wonderful person. He had a long, stoic career in the military, flying Black Hawk helicopters and serving as a commander,” Golden Police Chief Joe Harvey told CBS Denver. “He will leave behind a wonderful wife, sister and parents. Internally, he will be survived by 71 members of his Golden family.”

State Patrol announced Thursday that troopers had arrested 43-year-old Stephen Geer in connection with the crash and that Geer was charged with several offenses, including vehicular homicide involving DUI, two counts of vehicular assault involving DUI, and failure to comply with the state’s “Move Over” law.

State Patrol and numerous other law enforcement agencies in Colorado offered their condolences to Dunn’s friends and family.

“Our thoughts are with the members of the Golden Police Department and the friends and families of the officers involved,” State Patrol said.
