Johnstown man accused of raping 8-year-old

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) – A Johnstown man is facing charges after allegedly raping a minor and performing sex acts in October.

Mikel Gwinn, 29, is facing charges after a person came forward to police about the alleged rape, according to a criminal complaint. On October 6, officers from the Upper Yoder Township Police Department were contacted about an alleged child rape.

DOJ: Altoona man guilty of possessing child sexual abuse material

In a police interview, the 8-year-old child told officers that Gwinn raped her and performed sex acts on her on Oct. 5 and through Oct. 6. The child also told officers that Gwinn had allegedly shown her pornographic videos, according to the affidavit.

Gwinn reportedly escaped from police custody on October 17 but was taken into custody on November 6.

Gwinn is in the Cambria County Jail on 10% bail of $500,000. He faces charges of rape of a child, statutory sexual assault, involuntary deviant sexual intercourse with a child, aggravated indecent assault and a misdemeanor count of indecent assault on a person. Gwinn also faces a charge of escape and has a separate 10% bail of $500,000.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 13.
