Ruud van Nistelrooy’s ex-Man United teammate explains why he should leave the club before Ruben Amorim arrives

Ruud van Nistelrooy is too good to be Ruben Amorim’s assistant and is ready to become permanent manager again.

This is the view of Paul Scholes, who has told his former Manchester United team-mate that he should get a top job elsewhere rather than become No. 2 again.

The former striker is currently working as Man united‘s interim boss after the resignation of Erik ten Hag last month.

As assistant coach of Ten Hag, Van Nistelrooy has won two matches and drawn one since taking over as caretaker.

Of Reuben Amorim set to will take over as head coach next weekspeculation continues to swirl around Van Nistelrooy’s future as he looks for a role in Amorim’s backroom team at Old Trafford.

But rather than wait for his old job as assistant boss to arise, Man United legend Scholes – who spent five years with Van Nistelrooy at Old Trafford – believes the former PSV boss would be selling himself short.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Scholes said: “He just looks like a manager, that passion is there and he even dresses like a manager.

‘He just talks well, doesn’t he?

“He’s nice and calm, relaxed and goes about his business very well. I’m pretty sure he’s got the bug back to become a manager.

“If you’ve done it and been as successful as he was in the Netherlands, it must be quite difficult to become an assistant again.

“I asked him about it before the game because you might want to do certain things that you don’t agree with the manager and you can say it but it doesn’t matter because the buck stops with the manager.

“I don’t know if he will stay – that will depend on the new men and INEOS – but I think he should become a manager.

“In his three games he won the Dutch Cup, he won other things and he looks like he is made to be a manager.

“I don’t think he should belong to anyone else – I don’t want to say a puppy, but I think he’s better than being an assistant manager – I think he should be managing a club.”

Scholes continued: “There is a presence around him.

“He looks like a manager and he looks like he can deal with his players very well. When they came away they respected him and so it feels good for Ruud to go on and become a manager.

“But if he wants to stay, he has his contract for the next 18 months and if the powers that be still want him then why not.”

Van Nistelrooy will manage Man United for the last time on Sunday when they host Leicester in the Premier League at Old Trafford.
