A Kentucky man may have stolen up to 53 identities, police say

INDEPENDENCE, Ky. (WXIX) – A Kentucky man is facing charges after he was allegedly found with 53 stolen identities.

Kenton County Police Chief Spike Jones says his department was contacted by a Florida Sheriff’s Office about a man whose identity had been stolen.

Court documents show that the Florida man had never been to Kentucky, but accounts had been opened there in his name.

It turns out the Florida man was just one of dozens of stolen identities.

On November 7, Kenton County police arrested John Sharp.

After a search of his home, authorities found fake driver’s licenses from states including California, Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Utah.

“He created some identifications using other people’s information for the purpose of writing checks, opening businesses, opening accounts, withdrawing money, etc.,” Chief Jones said.

Jones goes on to say that there could be as many as 53 victims based on what was found.

“This is one of the larger ones I’ve seen during my tenure here at the Kenton County Police Department,” Jones said.

Sharp now faces at least 10 charges, including identity theft and forgery.

FOX19 NOW learned Sharp was sentenced to two years for similar charges in Boone County and released in November 2023.

Chief Jones encourages people to keep their personal information private.

“Check the pumps and make sure there is no card reading or phishing device connected to the pump while you enter your credit card with your personal information,” he warns. “It’s really up to us to be vigilant to protect that.”

John Sharp is due back in court on November 8.

Chief Jones says there could be more victims. If you believe you are a victim of identity theft or have any information about John Sharp,
